This week I would like to share with you my Mother & Daughter Crochet Hats. I didn't specifically set out to make matching hats for Lily and myself, it just sort of happened. I was actually trying out different stitches for a hat for myself using the 2 purple balls of chunky wool I had in my stash. In fact the initial ideas I had are nothing like the finished product but I am very pleased with these hats.
They are mostly worked in single crochet with a ribbed band at the bottom and 2 decorative stitch bands spread across the hat. I recently learnt puff stitch and thought this would go great in a hat, plus I love the wintery effect the star stitch adds to the hat. Then to finish it off they have a double layer flower attached, which due to the continuous design of the hat can be changed to the left or right sides depending on what you feel like wearing that day.
The chunky wool makes the hat super warm and having the same design as Lily means she is actually more likely to wear a hat if it is the same as Mummy's! Of course, having made us both a hat Oliver decided he needed one too, and set me the challenge of a dinosaur hat, but I shall share that with you another time.
If you want to make your own Mother & Daughter Crochet hats, then you can find the pattern below. You will need 100g of chunky wool per hat you make and they come in 3 different sizes, adult, child and toddler. The hats shown are in the adult and toddler sizes. The link is to the written pattern, however I will be uploading the video tutorial on my You Tube channel next Wednesday so be sure to check that out.
Unfortunately due to the huge amount of rain we have had here, I have been unable to get a good picture of us both wearing our hats outside, however, this one should give you an idea of what it looks like.
I hope you like the Mother & Daughter Crochet Hats as much as I have, see you in 2 weeks for more crochet fun.

Toddler hat is 18" around, child hat is
20" round and adult hat is 22" round
1. Materials and Resources
Below is a list of everything you will need to make each hat;
Below is a list of everything you will need to make these hats;
- Chunky yarn– 100g balls in any colour you like (1 ball per hat)
- 6 mm hook
- Tapestry needle
- Stitch marker
- Scissors
2. Stitch List
·
Sl st – slip stitch
·
Sc – single crochet
·
Sc inc – single crochet increase
·
Sc dec – single crochet decrease
·
hdc - half double crochet
·
dc - double crochet
·
trc - treble crochet
·
sc stack - instead of a ch 3 I use a sc and then
put another sc directly on top of it, this illuminates any gaps a ch3 might
have
·
fphdc - front post half double crochet - half
double crochet around post of stitch below starting at the front
·
bphdc - back post half double crochet -
half double crochet around post of stitch below starting at the back
·
Puff Stitch - Yarn over and insert hook through
stitch and pull up a loop - repeat this 4 times and then pull hook through all
the loops and ch 1
·
star stitch - ch 3, insert hook through 2nd and 3rd
stitches and then through the next 3 stitches pulling up a loop each time, then
yarn over and pull through all the loops on the hook and ch 1. This
competes the starting star. For all other stars, pull up a loop in
ch 1 space, then through the outside stitch of the previous star, then through
the base of the same stitch, then through the next 3 stitches, then yarn over
and pull through all loops on the hook and ch 1. Repeat all the way
around for the first round. The second round you turn your work ch3
and complete as the starting star, then continue around as above.
3. Notes
1. All these
patterns are worked in continuous rounds, do not sl st at the end of each round
unless stated in the pattern. A stitch marker is helpful for keeping track of
the start of your rows
2. Due to the
nature of the star stitch, the number of stars you will get is always half the
amount of stitches in the previous row plus 1.
3. Be careful
in the placing of the puff stitch as it is an increase round make sure you
double check where to put each stitch to make sure you get the correct amount.
4. There will
always be 2 sc in each star and puff stitch when working sc rows under these
stitches.
5. Gauge - 12
stitches and 16 rows of sc in a 4" square.
6. If you need
your hat slightly larger or smaller than the sizes above then you can use a
hook size larger of smaller.
